We don't ever truly get a dark sky in NYC, so when I go anywhere with fewer lights and more stars, I get excited.
On our big road trip we stopped in Badlands National Park in South Dakota, and we arrived just in time for the nightly "night sky program". We sat in an outdoor amphitheater and stared up at the sky while a guide told us all about the stars we could see.
Maybe it's corny to say, but I definitely had a moment of perspective staring up at all those far away stars... thinking about how small our little earth is in the galaxy of stars around us. And then thinking about how many incredible humans are walking around on this tiny ball floating in the giant universe.
There's something calming and centering about standing in a quiet place and attempting to take in the enormity of it all. It made me want to find more ways to look up the stars... even if Brooklyn makes it a little tricky.
Here's my attempt at a photo of the night sky. There were a few clouds and a full moon, so not as many stars as are sometimes visible there, but still way more than in Brooklyn.
What was the last place you visited with a good view of the night sky?
