I live in a house that makes me twitch a little bit in fear every time it rains.
This is a part of homeownership I didn't anticipate.

Shortly after we moved into our fabulous Brooklyn home, it rained in our bedroom.

I will never forget waking up in the middle of the night to the beautiful sound of rain. Then thinking the sound was much closer than it should be, given the closed windows. Then realizing the sound WAS much closer because it was raining inside the house. 😱

Anyway, we survived the night, sorted out the root cause of the problems, did all the things to remediate, and our house is now pretty solid whenever it rains.

Sometimes we have a few small leaks in the basement, and that water goes into a sump pump. Sometimes the drain in the backyard gets a little clogged and we clean it. But otherwise, rain is not usually an emergency or even an issue.

And yet, the sound of rain against the windows still raises my heart rate. 😬

So now I am doing the slow work to figure out how to separate the reality of problem solving water and rain versus the reaction my nervous system has to the sound of rain.

And yes, this is one of those moments where my clients nudge me and suggest maybe the things I do to help them every day would be useful for me to try for myself. 😉

What's something that sends your nervous system in overdrive even though you logically know everything is fine?
